Abstract

Divorce is a legal process that occurs when a marriage breaks down. However, the effects of divorce can last for years. While the knowledge and scientific understanding of the institution of marriage and family in the social sciences are clear and precise, the understanding of divorce remains less developed. In fact, the concept of divorce has been subject to more social stigma than the concepts of marriage, family, and homemaking, and this is probably why preconceived (mostly negative) opinions about divorce still persist. Just as the institution of marriage evolves, the consequences of divorce also undergo many changes.

The consequences of divorce affect not only the well-being of the former spouses and children in the family, but also society as a whole. To better understand the situation of divorced women and children in Kazakhstan, we will analyze research conducted by the Kazakhstan Institute of Social Development on the topics of family, marriage and divorce.  In addition, within the framework of this article, we analyze the dynamics of Kazakhstan's marriage and divorce statistics, as well as statistical data obtained from the results of the national population census.
